Watch Out: AI Scams Are Ramping Up This Tax Season

Tax time is already stressful enough, now we’ve got scammers using AI to make it even worse.

The ATO has warned that phishing scams are on the rise, with a huge spike in realistic-looking emails, fake tax agent profiles, and even AI-generated voice calls pretending to be from government departments. These scams are getting harder to spot, and they’re not just targeting businesses anymore—everyday people are being hit too.

We’ve seen it first-hand: customers getting tricked by emails that look identical to real ones, or clicking links that lead to professional-looking fake portals asking for bank info, IDs, or passwords.

Here’s a few things you can do to stay safe:

  • If you get a message claiming to be from the ATO, check it directly through their website or MyGov

  • Don’t click on links or attachments in messages from unknown senders

  • Use two-factor authentication wherever possible

  • Keep your passwords unique (a password manager helps a lot)

At Cyber Coral Solutions, we’re offering free 30-minute consultations during tax season to help people check if their devices and accounts are protected. If you’re not sure whether your setup is scam-proof, reach out and we’ll walk you through it—no pressure, just help.

These scams are only going to get smarter. The best thing you can do is stay informed and double-check before clicking anything.
